Where Are the Vanilla Wafers?!
There is a nationwide shortage, and I need answers
At first I thought there were no vanilla wafers on the stores shelves due to the holiday season. Thanksgiving and Christmas seems like an appropriate time for banana pudding as a dessert. After still seeing the holes on the shelf in January, I thought maybe the shortage was pandemic related, since we were seeing shipping delays nationwide. Now in March, I don’t know what to think.
I finally got my banana pudding recipe perfect! I make the pudding from scratch and shamelessly look down on those who don’t :) Kidding. Banana pudding has become our family’s regular dessert. I got so good, my family suggested I start selling it. Now that I’ve figured out how to put my foot in it, I can’t find vanilla wafers — ANYWHERE!
I’ve been to three stores just today alone, and have been searching for the past week. Frustrated, I finally asked one store employee, who confirmed they haven’t had them in weeks, and could not tell me when they’d be getting more.
I searched the internet to find out why but all I found out was that they are banned from Whole Foods because they have two ingredients forbidden at the popular health conscious grocery store. Fine. Mondelēz owns the Nilla Wafers brand, and I found nothing on their website about this shortage.
It is to be noted that Vanilla or Nilla Wafers do not contain vanilla, but does contain high fructose syrup, plus some other ingredients that can’t be easily pronounced. I’m taking this as a sign to make homemade vanilla wafers, so I can brag about being able to make an entire banana pudding from scratch, including the wafers made with real vanilla and wholesome ingredients.
I’ll keep you all posted on how I do.
